Reviews:

“Gernot Wolfgang’s Open Spaces is enthralling, with its elaborate flourishes ending with long notes, cast into the void.”

Duncan Druce, Gramophone

“Gernot Wolfgang (b. 1957) is a native of Austria whose activities are now centered in Los Angeles and its film industry; his Open Spaces for clarinet and piano seeks to evoke “the vast expanse of geographical areas such as the American West,” symbolized in part by large melodic intervals. Written in 2013 for Ladstätter, the piece has elements of jazz, bits of Second Viennese School, and more than a whiff of Messiaen. There are some imaginative and difficult passages in unison for the two instruments, nicely rendered by Ladstätter and the Japanese pianist Keiko Hattori.

Richard A. Kaplan, Fanfare
